More than a motto

De Oppresso Liber

A military phrase redirected toward an eternal mission.

“De Oppresso Liber” is traditionally translated as “to free the oppressed.” It carries deep personal meaning because of Johnny Perez’s service in the U.S. Army Special Forces. Within this ministry, however, the phrase is not a claim of military authority. It is a reminder that lasting freedom comes through Jesus Christ.

Oppression is not always visible. Fear, shame, trauma, addiction, isolation, false identity, and spiritual bondage can imprison a person without chains. The ministry exists to meet people in those places and point them toward the One who still sets captives free.

Our mission

To help people walk in the freedom of Christ, develop resilient faith, recover God-given identity, and become equipped to serve others with courage, discipline, humility, and love.

We do not seek strength for domination. We seek strength that can endure hardship, protect the vulnerable, carry another person’s burden, and remain faithful under pressure.

Biblical foundation

The mission begins and ends with Christ.

Luke 4:18

Freedom

Christ came to proclaim freedom to the captive and good news to the poor.

John 8:36

Identity

True freedom is not self-made. If the Son sets us free, we are free indeed.

Galatians 5:13

Service

Freedom is not permission to live for ourselves; it is a calling to serve one another in love.

Ephesians 6:12

Readiness

The deepest battles are spiritual. We prepare through truth, righteousness, faith, Scripture, and prayer.

The invitation

Before formation comes an encounter with Jesus.

Before there can be training, discipleship, or spiritual formation, there must first be the Gospel. Come As You Are is the ministry’s open invitation to receive the grace of Jesus Christ, leave the old life behind, and begin again.

A note from the founder

The mission changed. The calling to serve did not.

My military service taught me that freedom is costly, preparation matters, and no one succeeds alone. It also taught me that some of the hardest battles cannot be seen.

De Oppresso Liber Ministries is where those lessons meet my faith in Jesus Christ. This is not about recreating a military unit inside the church. It is about bringing discipline, courage, fellowship, service, and mission-focused leadership under the authority of Christ.

We do not fight in our own strength. Jesus calls us to take up the whole armor of God, withstand the evil day, and having done all, to stand victorious.

In service,Johnny Perez

The work ahead
